The Physician – Book One The Stolen Ones

Jake Perlman’s fate changed forever as a child when a dam broke on the way to school, washing his bus over a bridge.
Before the Angel of Death could claim him, a Shepherd named Omiel stole Jake from his fate.
Now as a Stolen in his adulthood, Jake uses his powers under Omiel’s guidance to assemble his coterie, a group of Stolen with abilities like his.
Yael Taube learned in her youth she would become a Companion, the soulmate to a Stolen. After an unfortunate event finds Yael in the presence of her Stolen, Jake, things take motion.
Jake and Yael learn of their fates and see hope for their future. However, pulling the coterie together is anything but easy. Between their shared trauma, doubt in their fate, and evil beings called Sirens trying to harm them, the coterie’s future is anything but certain. Despite the Shepherds’ direction, there are dangers ahead. If the Stolen and their
Companions come together too soon, it could lead to their undoing, but the world and the coterie are counting on their success.
What is the Story Behind Your Story?
The Stolen Ones series came out of a dream I had one night. I woke up and pondered the story in my head and decided it would make an excellent novel. I initially started to write what would be book two in the series and realized it was not the beginning of the story. I placed that manuscript aside and began to write The Physician based on a supporting character in book two.
What Was Your Journey to Publication?
After finishing my manuscript, I found the Write Divas editing company and paid for my book to be edited. Lauren, my editor, was fantastic and really helped me take my book to the next level. With her assistance, I refined my book and started researching publication companies and their requirements. After reaching out to a number of agents, a friend, Kate McKinney, told me about a new publishing company started by her friend. I submitted my query to Brittany Mack at Conquest Publishing, and she immediately picked up my series. I was shocked and elated to have been given such an opportunity.
Are You a Plotter or Pantser and What Does That Process Look Like For You?
I’m a pantser when it comes to writing. I first develop the characters with their personalities, desires, and quirks. Then I plot out the high level plot. Basically, I know the beginning, middle, and end of the novel, but the path between those points are driven by how the characters would react to the various scenarios. I do repeatedly return to the manuscript to refine the story or specific scenes until I am satisfied with the result.
What is Your Favorite Writing Tool?
I use a website called World Anvil. Although the site is intended for RPG players to craft their settings, I use it to expand on characters and other ideas to flesh out my world.
What is Your Favorite Writing Resource?
I don’t really use resources in a traditional way. I bounce ideas off of trusted friends and family, as well as, doing research into various aspects of life and culture that would affect my characters.
What Has Surprised You the Most About Writing or Publishing
I was surprised the most about how a good editor can make or break one’s book. Without my editor, my book would have been far less robust and exciting. I had always viewed editors as more of a proofreader before hiring Lauren. Afterward, I realized I needed a good editor at my back to ensure that my manuscript is the best that it could be.
What’s Next?
Book Two in the series will be called The Comforter and is ready to go to the editor. I’m currently working on Book Three to polish it up and make my own developmental edits before it needs to be presented to the publisher. I have also dusted off an old project in the Sci-Fi Romance genre and I’m considering taking a break from the Stolen Ones to finish that project.
What is Your Number One Tip for Writers?
Find the way you work best and make a schedule for yourself. Treat it like a job. I worked best by crafting music playlists and locking myself away to write after I leave my 9-5. I set goals for myself as to how many pages I will write in a given day or week. If one is going to finish their project, they need to take it seriously.
