My daughters are my best friends. But they aren’t only my best friends, they are also each other’s best friends.
But first, a little backstory. (which of course I NEVER recommend in the opening pages of your fictional novel:)
Danielle is my first-born. I had her living in poverty in a run-down trailer park as a teenager. Books helped me get through some of those darkest of days. I clawed my way out, went to college as single mother and went on to enjoy a twenty-year career as a children and youth librarian. (If you want to know more—this is the premise for my YA debut WORTH IT with Wild Ink Publishing.
Danielle went on to major in British Literature and eventually law school. She now runs a book club for her law firm. (Proud mama moment!)
Juggling her middle school years, Liv was always my little library assistant. She helped me shelve books, pick out new titles for the collection, and loved manning the circulation desk anytime she could avoid her other less-preferred classes! She’s now working with a publisher making book covers, illustrations and more. (Yep, another proud mama moment!)
But moreso than any thing listed above, is that I’m SO glad that my daughters adopted my love for literature. And I love that even though when we’re far apart (Danielle and I live near, but Liv now lives away from us) reading books makes us feel close.
As a former librarian and mother, seeing my daughters grow up as life long readers, there’s no better feeling.
If you’d like me bring them onto the Author(ish) podcast drop a comment. I think I’m feeling a new episode series!
I love these girls, despite and because of, the way they challenge, and love me. All the feels on a Friday! So here you go, a poorly recorded portion of a conversation that I hope gives you a weekend chuckle!
A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.
